“Advanced treatment minimally invasive small incision surgery”

Dr. Wagnon treats his patients like family. His staff provides a quality, caring environment from the first step in the office, through the physical exam and work-up to evaluations and treatment.

Treatment initially is conservative with advice, physical therapy, injections when needed and surgery only if necessary.

Dr. Wagnon and his staff stay up-to-date on the latest techniques to work-up and treat shoulder problems. Review of recent literature, continued medical education classes and lectures, meetings and direct observation with leading shoulder specialists make this total orthopaedic practice package possible.

The most recent advances in shoulder surgery enable Dr. Wagnon to perform delicate surgery through small “minimally invasive” incisions. Dr. Wagnon provides these new advances for his patients and is at the forefront in using these new techniques.

Dr. Wagnon has been providing arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder since 1984.

The definition of a shoulder:
The shoulder is several joints that combine with tendons and muscles to allow a wide range of motion to the arm.

Shoulder Pain:
1. Are you feeling pain in your shoulder when you:

  • Lift your arm from your body

  • Lift your arm/hand over your head

  • Are quiet watching TV

  • Sleeping

  • Working

  • Playing Sports

2. Do you hear or feel popping or clicking in your shoulder?

3. Does your shoulder feel unstable?

Causes of pain in the shoulder:

  • tendonitis/bursitis

  • injury/instability/tears

  • arthritis

  • sports injuries

  • trauma/fractures

Tendonitis: A tendon is a cord that connects muscle to bone or other tissue. Most tendonitis pain is a result of the wearing process that takes place over a period of years. It can be caused by overuse (excessive throwing of a ball or other sports or work-related activities).
Age can be a factor with tendonitis – chronic tendonitis can be the result of degenerative disease due to age.

Injury/Instability: Can result in the dislocation of one of the joints in the shoulder. Recurring dislocations, whether partial or complete, cause pain and unsteadiness when you raise your arm or move it away from your body. Some refer to the feeling as "shifting," "out of place," or having  a “dead” arm.

Arthritis: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Post-traumatic arthritis, Gout.
Symptoms of arthritis usually develop gradually, but in some cases it can have a sudden onset. The shoulder may become stiff, swollen, making it difficult to bend or straighten.  Arthritis pain can be related to previous work or sports injuries.

Sports Injuries –
If you are you unable to participate in your sport at your top level you may be suffering from:

  • Rotator Cuff Tear

  • Labral Gasket Tear

  • Ligament/ tendon sprain

Diagnosis
Diagnosing the source of the problem is essential. Many shoulder conditions are aggravated by specific activities and relieved by specific activities, therefore a medical history and an exam are key to finding the source of your pain and developing the proper treatment.

Treatments:
Many shoulder injuries can be treated through physical therapy, while others may need surgery to repair the torn or damaged muscles and ligaments.

Physical therapy:
We can design a therapy plan to assist you in regaining the strength and use of your shoulder.

Surgery:

  • Athroscopic Camera Repair : A minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows patients to return to their activities as early as possible

  • Mini (small incision) Repairs • Instability & Labral/Ligament Repairs

  • Rotator Cuff Repairs

  • Partial Shoulder Replacement
